In a series of articles, we will update our readers on all our activities in India. First out is Laxmamma who here tells her story through participation in our adult education classes.
Adult education helps to make women more independent.
I'm Laxmamma, one of more than 300 poor women who attended SevaChildren's adult lieracy classes. I'm from the village of Kamandoddi in the state of Tamil Nadhu and I work as a garbage collector in my village. I was illiterate, and could not read or write. I could not write my name and I could not count or add numbers. Today, after attending SevaChildren's adult literacy classes, I have learned to read and write, and am now able to do simple arithmetic operations. I can also use my mobile phone for various purposes, and now have my own bank card and bank account. In the past, I was completely dependent on others, which I found humiliating. Today I do not need that help. I manage myself .. My husband and my two sons are also proud on my behalf - and of my achievements!
